On May 15, 2000, a traffic incident occurred.
My son, Kento Kojima, lived for two weeks after that day, burning through his life.
Everything written here is based entirely on what we, as his family, personally experienced.
We had no idea what situation victims and their families are forced into when such an incident suddenly occurs.
In modern Japan, with its well-developed infrastructure, the reality faced by individual victims and bereaved families was far more severe than we could have imagined.
Against large organizations with significant power, individuals are left frightened, burdened with suffering, and pushed into silence.
During the final two weeks of my son’s life, I fought at his side.
Even while fearing death and trembling…
He never stopped believing in life until the very end.
Those 14 days - our struggle amid terror - became a refusal to remain silent.
Now, I raise my voice.
We will make it public what was done to individuals under organizational power, and what happens to bereaved families after such incidents.
What we truly wished for after the incident was “information disclosure, ” because the truth lies there.
However, I learned through lived experience that information is never freely given - it must be grasped with one’s own hands.
I speak out now, in order to live this present life with everything I have.
A path of grief trails behind me.
Crying, I move forward.
Carrying within me the “life” of my son that still lives within my being, I raise my voice and continue to walk.
We aim for the day when a “zero traffic-incident society” becomes a reality in Japan.
